<description>I&#039;m in agreement with some of what you&#039;re saying there, and there&#039;s no disputing that Marchal&#039;s background as a cop provides one of the film&#039;s most satisfying elements: the feeling of reality when groups of cops are together. And yes, the performances are strong...allowing for the weakness of the script. That&#039;s where the whole thing falls apart for me: the story itself is strong, but the script is lousy.</description>

<description>Marchal was a flic himself at one time and cites as the basis for his film Dumas&#039;s The Count of Monte Cristo and the experiences of a fellow cop jailed for breaking the law whole pursuing larger concerns of justice.

The title of the film, 36 (aka 36 Quai des Orfevres) is the address of the Paris police headquarters and the plot turns on the conflict between two cops heading conflicting branches within the Quai des Orfevres. Played by Depardieu and Auteuil respectively, they
are the brutal, drunken, corrupt Denis Klein of theOCU (anti-crime unit) and the decent,hard-drinking, law-bending Leo Vrinks of the BRI (search and action squad). Both are in contention to succeed their boss as Head of the CID and come into conflict in the course of pursuing a ruthless band of criminals.
The upshot of this is what the film is about and I felt that Marchal had succeeded in providing a bleak and satisfying film with an immensely engaging tarnished hero in Auteuil.

I have not seen 36 touted as the gallic Heat except on the wrapper and that was provided by the Daily Mirror...Nuf Sed !!!
